Chapter 1.14 – She’s A Boss

Dear Diary,

Back home, women in relationships didn’t work very hard to maintain friendships outside of their partners. It was like this unspoken thing: that man must become the center of your world.

That never made sense to me, and I’m lucky to be with someone who’s secure enough not to care about my friendships. Not a lot of men around here would be okay with their girlfriend getting so close to Don Lothario. But Khaled was confident and secure. He wasn’t worried. He trusted me.

When Don asked me to hang out for all sort of random events, Khaled was always cool about it.

Khaled was more than able to keep himself occupied, whether it was an off day where I had to work, or because I was hanging with a friend without him. He didn’t cook much, but he loved to grill.

And he’d even started learning chess so we could share something I loved together.

I appreciated that he took those steps to keep us independent, yet connected. As much as I loved my friends and my job, my favorite thing was still to spend time with Khaled, doing a bunch of nothing. We could just lay down on the stone path next to our house and cloudgaze for hours. It was like we were in our own bubble, and no one else mattered.

My wonderful artist boyfriend did have a limit on how long he could cloudgaze. He almost always got a fantastic idea for a painting and would head over to his canvas to pour out his heart. Even if his heart was screaming for another darn bunny to be painted.

This home rhythm we’d settled into just felt right though. We didn’t have to have ongoing conversations about home management. If the sink got dirty, the person who noticed it first cleaned it.

I really feel like it was Khaled’s equitable view of love and home life that boosted me to feel my best. I never had to make myself small to make him feel big. So when I got my much anticipated promotion to Vice President, he was just as happy for me as I was for myself.

We were okay on the bills for the week, so I used my promotion bonus for something pretty indulgent. I finally got that computer I’d been eyeing for so long. Khaled might have to paint an extra painting or two just to get us back to stress free bank account numbers, but he said it was worth it.

I realized that in my push to earn this promotion and become the youngest Vice President in the history of the company, I’d been neglecting my beloved plants. So while Khaled took the new computer for a test drive, I set about watering, weeding, and spraying for bugs.

Working in my garden felt like coming home to me. This corner of my land was my happy place, and nothing was going to stop me from enjoying it.

Well… something did stop me. I was really really tired and overestimated how long I could push it. I passed out again, believe it or not.

Khaled was so engrossed in the computer, and really enjoying breaking in my new Executron chair, that he didn’t even notice me passed out.

I promise this time I really have learned my lesson and will take my butt to bed at a reasonable hour. And I’ll probably hire a gardener. Life shouldn’t be harder than it has to. Wow, one big promotion, and I’m already hiring help for the house. I gotta make sure I don’t end up on some slippery slope and turn back into an actual debutante and not just one in nickname only.

AUTHOR’S NOTE {ISBI SCORE: 5 – 5 = 0. Nivea and her sleeping self. I’m glad I’m not playing the Hard version of ISBI, lol, she needs a gardener. My only other option was to graft all the plants together, but that’s not a great option because then the harvest is less profitable.}
